Through her not for profit community interest company, Be Inspired to Grow, she supports midlife career change seekers, to develop confidence, skills and competencies to compete in the fast-paced business world. They organise virtual networking events and talk shows to educate and communicate with our members and audience, covering topics on career development both in the corporate world and in business.
How She Made A Successful Career Change
We asked Veronica why and how she successfully changed her careers, here is what she said:
Over 16 years ago, on arriving in the UK as an international student from Africa, for a Masters in Human Resource Management (HRM).
I was super confident that a postgraduate degree was the ticket I needed to change my life forever, little did I know that it wasn’t going to be that simple.
How could I have guessed that I would fall pregnant soon after my postgraduate degree and end up taking a career break to start a family or spend years after maternity trying to break into the HR field, simply because I lacked UK experience at the time?
I tried sending out 100s of job applications weekly, and was met with constant rejections and the popular… “sorry you have not been successful this time”
I had to settle for temporary agency jobs, which would come few and far between and was earning £7.50/hr in spite of the stressful and sometimes unpleasant conditions involved.
I ended up unhappy, underpaid and unfulfilled doing the temp jobs I had to do. But, I had to do something to make ends meet.
Fast forward a few years, where I finally had a breakthrough. I was able to successfully make a career change into the IT space. Moved to a career that I was happy and fulfilled in, looked forward to waking up to go to work. I enjoyed flexibility at work and was able to spend quality time with my family and go on nice family holidays.
Imagine such a big leap, moving from earning £52.50 to £450 per day, (about £90K per year).
Now I am a high achiever, in a management position within a global organization, and running a coaching & training business.
