Ifeoluwa Oyatokun is a passionate social revolutionist, an author, a wife and a mother of one.
She is a business banker by profession and by passion, she runs an organisation called AfricHer Rising, the first female educational community for political leaders across Africa.
About AfricHer Rising
AfricHer Rising is the first female educational community for political leaders across Africa. They engage and empower women intellectually for quality and competent leadership in the African political space.
Their goal is to communicate excellence, stimulate and inspire excellent-thinking women, and prepare them towards competent leadership across African geo-developmental spheres. One of their most firm credence is that they prioritise competence over inclusion.
Why She Started AfricHer Rising
We asked her why she is passionate about AfricHer Rising, she said: Watching my grandmother roll on the ground, in tears while SARS officials barge into my our home in the middle of the night, carting my father away during an election, all to intimidate him into defecting to the ruling party back then, gave me one conclusion – “Politics is a dirty game, and I would be the last generation where the buck stops.” I vowed.
Well, I would say my journey into making my peace with the calling is quite spiritual. There was always that strong pull and fragrance, everyone else saw it but I never admitted to anyone why I wouldn’t budge until I had an encounter. It felt like a veil had dropped and I saw clearly the depth of the rot around me and my role in it.
After acceptance, came anger, questions and eventually -answers. If we had every good person excused, who will run the place? And if we chose simply because they are good, who will transform the place?
So yes, I believe in good governance, and the magic of femininity, but if we speak the language of inclusion alone, without an emphasis on excellence, history will simply repeat itself.
How Their Work Is Changing Lives
One of their strategies is to catch-them-young, so they have been inspiring young people to summon the courage to take up leadership positions in their respective institutions.
They also have women, who now openly, boldly and readily not only get involved in their local political affairs but challenge themselves with the right knowledge.
They have also built a growing community of women on Facebook.
