Shine Begho Usanga is a media personality with over 15 years of experience in radio and television as a host/presenter, producer and content creator.

She has been a host of a variety of shows and events in and out of Nigeria and has worked as a voice-over artist with various brands. As a beauty and skincare influencer, she has worked with South Korean and Nigerian brands.

She also recently started an initiative called The Shine Begho Intiative to create awareness for pre-eclampsia.

About The Shine Begho  Initiative
The Shine Begho Initiative was birthed in 2016 but officially started to create awareness for pre-eclampsia, a life-threatening condition that affects pregnant women and their unborn children in 2022.

The awareness is done offline and online and they also use various media houses to spread the awareness of preeclampsia. They talk about the signs and symptoms that pregnant moms need to be aware of and more.

Why She Started Raising Awareness About Pre-eclampsia/Eclampsia
We asked her why she is passionate about this campaign, this is what she said:

I have been working on this initiative and this Project since late 2016 after I survived Pre-eclampsia/Eclampsia in April 2016.

I was hospitalized in early February 2016 after my blood pressure refused to come down, the hospital continued to manage my condition until I was 33 and a half weeks. I remember the last test I took after my doctor got the result, he had this disappointing look written all over his face as he told me that my time was up according to the test result I had less than 24hours to live, If I didn’t do an emergency operation I was going to die with my unborn child, so an emergency c-section had to be done.

Unfortunately, my son didn’t survive, he died 11 days after.

During my stay at the hospital, I got to hear stories from the nurses of women who didn’t survive it along with their unborn children. Yes, I was diagnosed with this silent killer during my Antenatal appointment and was managed by the hospital. Sadly, I can’t say the same for the women who could not afford antenatal care and had to go home to deal with this deadly condition they know nothing about, therefore dying and taking along with them their unborn child to the afterlife.

Since I have survived pre-eclampsia/eclampsia I want to help other women be aware of this condition, what I didn’t have then was awareness, now I am bridging that gap by creating all-year-round awareness and saving lives through the SHINE BEGHO INITIATIVE.

How Her Work Is Changing Lives
The Shine Begho Initiative is not only about the awareness of pre-eclampsia/eclampsia all year round but also aims to also sponsor women for free ante-natal care, these are women who cannot afford it.

In Nigeria, approximately 34% of pregnant women receive no antenatal care, putting them at higher risk of Maternal mortality/death. And also Nigeria has the 2nd highest rate of preeclampsia, so the Shine Begho Initiative is about saving not 1 but 2 lives (mother and child).

Pre-eclampsia/eclampsia has no cure, it is a life-threatening complication for the mother ranging from organ damage to death if not treated quickly and competently. Regular ante-natal care is however most important to enable early detection.

This is why the SHINE BEGHO initiative for pre-eclampsia/eclampsia awareness, in Partnership with Hobbs Africa, padimi.co and the African seed foundation, supported by the first festival mall and studio 24 Nigeria are sponsoring women who can’t afford ante-natal caregiving it to them for free all year round through the help of brand sponsors and individual citizens.

Advice To Pregnant Women
Pre-eclampsia/eclampsia has no cure, it is a life-threatening complication for the mother ranging from organ damage to death if not treated quickly and competently. Regular ante-natal care is most important to enable early detection and treatment.

Signs to look out for are swelling on hands and feet, severe headaches or visual flashing lights, rising blood pressure and protein in the urine, if you notice these signs go straight to the hospital for proper care.

Never miss your ante-natal care appointment, because it is during ante-natal, it can be found either through blood pressure check-ups or protein in the urine test.
