According to a report by the Future of Jobs, 2020, Complex Problem Solving is the top skill of the future!

Developing your problem-solving skills can only come from actually experiencing challenges (so don’t feel bad when you experience them!), with time you get better at solving them. Remember that challenges usually lead to growth.

Problem-solving skills are very crucial to career success. You will always be faced with one challenge or the other on your job, in fact, if you are not facing challenges, you’re probably not growing.

See a few tips to keep in mind when you’re faced with a challenge at work.

Understand The Problem & The Context
Before you go into solving a problem at work, take time to actually understand the problem in-depth. Think through the causes of the problem, its effects, and the context. Don’t think about the problem on a surface level.

Don’t Take It Personally
Don’t get emotional with challenges at work. Try not to get overwhelmed or think ‘why me’ see them as learning opportunities to help you grow and develop. Have a positive attitude towards problems and think in terms of solutions.

Focus On A Solution
Now that you understand the problem and have the right attitude, think about the solution. Do your research to figure out how other people have dealt with similar situations and the resources you might need.

Ask For Help
Asking for help is also a great step in problem-solving. Your co-workers, manager, or even friends can provide a different perspective on how to approach the problem.

Take Your Learnings
It’s important to learn from each problem-solving experience. Note how you responded to the problem, what you did and how you can improve in the future.

Document How You Were Able To Solve The Challenge
Problem-solving skills are very vital and organizations always test prospective employees on their problem-solving skills so be sure to document your experiences. What was the problem, how did you overcome it and what was the result. This can be highlighted on your CV and during performance appraisals.
